Pro-Active Prostate Health
Ignorance of prostate health could be life threatening. Prostate health is especially important for black men with death rates from prostate cancer nearly two-and-a-half times higher than white men, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Since the prostate gland plays a role in both sex and urination many people feel uncomfortable talking about it, even though prostate enlargement is a common part of men’s health.

| As male life expectancy rises, so does the occurrence of a swollen or enlarged prostate due to aging. With prostate problems affecting 12% of men, chances are you, or someone you care about, will eventually have to deal with this problem. An enlarged prostate does not necessarily mean prostate cancer. The exact cause of prostate cancer is not known, however, a fat-rich diet coupled with genetic predispositions is suspected to be behind it. The male hormone Testosterone stimulates the growth of the prostate and the cancer cells that it might be containing. The prostate is an organ located beneath the urinary bladder and wrapped around the urethra in men and is about the size of a walnut. It is an integral part of the male reproductive system. |

| After the age of forty, the gland may enlarge and pressurize the urethra through which the urine is passed.
The symptoms associated with enlarged prostate - dribbling, incontinence, burning sensation and the necessity to get up in the night frequently for urinating - can cause extreme irritation and annoyance.
If left unchecked, benign prostate enlargement can cause serious health problems over time, including urinary tract infections, kidney or bladder damage, bladder stones, incontinence. It is important to take care of your prostate as you would any other organ and address any prostate problems you may be having.
